Complete in three volumes. Bound by Hatchards. Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume, and one plate in Volume III. Collated, complete. The autobiography of John Ruskin, this second edition published in the year of his death. This is considered to be his last great work, first published in 1885-89. It's considered to be a personal and eloquent autobiography, though not completely honest about all aspects of his life. John Ruskin was an art critic in Victorian England, being an influential figure in the art world, especially with the Pre-Raphaelites. He was also greatly admired by Leo Tolstoy, Marcel Proust, and William Morris. Prior owner's gift inscription to the verso to the front endpaper of Volume I, 'Alice Hudson, the first Lady Mayor of Eastbourne, a New Year's memorial of her memorable mayorality, from her affectionate old friend, C. Crowden, D.D. Jan 1 1928'. Hudson was the first woman councillor and mayor of Eastbourne, becoming a councillor in 1919 and Mayor in 1926. Letter from Crowden to Alice loosely inserted. CONDITION In a half calf binding by Hatchards with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart, with some light rubbing to the leather. Spines are joints are very light faded. A few very small marks to the boards and spines. Some spots to the fore edges. Front hinge of Volume II is starting but firm. Prior owner's gift inscription to the verso to the front endpaper of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional spot. Overall Condition: Very Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good.
