Bound by Hatchards. In six volumes, each work being complete in two volumes. A uniformly bound set of three important biographies by W. H. Wilkins, on Queen Sophia Dorothea, Caroline Matilda, and Maria Fitzherbert. 'The Love of an Uncrowned Queen', published in 1900. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece and twenty plates, Volume II with a frontispiece, and twenty plates. Sophia was the wife of King George I, and mother of George II. Including her correspondence with her lover Philip Christopher Count Konigsmarck, here first published from the originals. 'A Queen of Tears', published in 1904. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece and twenty-four plates, Volume II with a frontispiece, and twenty-two plates. On Caroline Matilda, the Princess of Britain and the Queen of Denmark and Norway, who is known for her doomed affair with the physician Johann Friedrich Struensee. 'Mrs. Fitzherbert and George IV', published in 1905. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece and twenty-six plates. Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece, two folding plates, and twenty-two plates. On the longtime lover of George IV, Maria Fitzherbert, who had married in an invalid wedding in 1785. The pair met when Fitzherbert was twice widowed. After meeting, the Prince Regent, who was six years her junior, was smitten and infatuated by her. They secretly married a year later, this it was not valid by law, and it is thought that they had one or two children together. Collated, bound without the publisher's adverts, otherwise complete, with all plates present. From the library of W. A. Foyle at Beeleigh Abbey, with his morocco bookplate to the front paste down. William Foyle was the co-founder of Foyles bookshop, founding the leading bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex, which became home to his library, one the largest private libraries in England. CONDITION In a half crushed morocco with cloth to the boards, bound by Hatchards. Externally, smart. Spines are faded. Very light bumping to the extremities. Only a few small marks to the boards and spines. Cloth to the rear joint of 'Mrs. Fitzherbert and George IV' Volume I is a little cockled, and to the tail of the front joint of Volume II. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Gift inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper of 'A Queen of Tears' Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some spotting.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
