A study of the images surrounding Napoleon Bonaparte, from his striking portraits to the satirical illustrations of newspapers under his reign. An interesting biography on the polarising historical figure. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and both full-paged and in-text illustrations. Written by Armand Dayot, a French art critic and historian. Bookplate of Major Sir Brunel Cohen to the front pastedown, with a later example of his bookplate loosely inserted. Cohen was a British Conservative Party politician, who massively campaigned on the behalf of disabled people after he lost both of his legs in the First World War. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper, 'From Theresa Otterbourg, Jack's godmother who wishes him many happy returns of his birthday - 1905'. Theresa was the godmother of Jack Benn Cohen, whose bookplate it to the front pastedown. CONDITION In the original quarter morocco binding with decorative cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with some light rubbing to the boards and spines. Extremities are a little worn. Spine is a touch faded. Front hinge is starting but firm. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with a couple of light handling marks.
