These two volumes explore the personal life and works of the eminent eighteenth century Enlightenment writer, and his importance in the country in the decades before the Revolution. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, and eight plates. Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece, and eight plates. Written by Evelyn Beatrice Hall under the pseudonym Stephen G. Tallentyre. Bookplate of Sir William Eden to the front paste downs. Collated, complete. CONDITION In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards, bound by Hatchards. Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the joints. Very small amount of loss to the head of the spines. Minor spots to the boards. Hinges are starting a little but remain firm. Scattered spots to the paste downs and endpapers. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso of the front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
