Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882), was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, abolitionist, and poet who led the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. Emerson was seen as a champion of individualism and his work has greatly influenced the thinkers, writers, and poets that followed him. Emerson is also well known as a mentor and friend of Henry David Thoreau. With a page listing other publications of Cary’s works to the front. Containing 20 wonderful plates, including frontispiece, all with tissue guard. Collated, complete. Final plate is on page 162 rather than 172 as stated in the illustrations list at the front of the book. A printed paper note is stuck to the edge of the contents page: “The Essay on Emerson by Maeterlinck printed in this volume is included under arrangement with Mr. George Allen who controls the English publishing rights for the same.” CONDITION In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Gilt title and decoration to the spine. Externally, smart. Some very light markings to the boards. Very light rubbing to the extremities. Marbled paper to pastedowns and recto of endpapers. School prize bookplate to recto of front endpaper. Dated 1904-1905. Spotting to endpapers, particularly rear endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional spot. Printed paper note stuck to edge of contents page. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
