Bound by Bickers. These two biographies explore the life and works of the two great painters. Van Dyck was a Flemish Baroque artist of the seventeenth century, his volume is illustrated with a frontispiece, and thirty-four plates. John Hoppner was a portrait painter who was mostly active in the eighteenth century, known for being a brilliant colourist. This volume is illustrated with a frontispiece, and thirty-nine plates. Collated, complete. From the library of W. A. Foyle at Beeleigh Abbey, with his morocco bookplate to the front paste downs. William Foyle was the co-founder of Foyles bookshop, founding the leading bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex, which became home to his library, one the largest private libraries in England. CONDITION In a half crushed morocco binding with cloth to the boards, bound by Bickers. Externally, smart. Spine and extremities are a little faded. Minor rubbing and marks to the boards and spines, a little heavier to 'Van Dyck'. Light bumping to the extremities. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional scattered spot. Overall Condition: Very Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.
