Complete in three volumes. Uniformly bound in a lovely half calf with cloth boards. This work features the diary of John Evelyn, an English writer, gardener, and minor government official who is best known for this diary. Evelyn's diary was extensive, spanning from 1641 to 1697 and covering many historic events such as the execution of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell's rise and death, the Great Plague of London and the Great Fire of London. Edited, with an introduction and notes by English poet and essayist, Austin Dobson. Profusely illustrated throughout, with eighteen plates and a frontispiece to volume I, twenty-four plates and a frontispiece to volume II and fourteen plates and a frontispiece to volume II. Includes maps, portraits and views, some of which are folding. Collated, complete. With the pictorial bookplate of Alexander Stone, a Scottish banker and philanthropist, and the namesake of the Sir Alexander Stone building at Glasgow University. An additional bookplate of Henry T Pearson to the front paste down. CONDITION Bound in half calf with cloth boards. Externally, very smart indeed, with light rubbing to the extremities and spines and the odd mark to boards. Slight fading to the spines. Bookplates to the front paste down and front endpaper. Light spotting to the fore edge. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot. Numbered stamp to the front blank. The occasional orn tissue guard. Plate bound to page 97 instead of 113 as stated, in volume III. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
