1908 FUNK WAGNALL 2 VOL STANDARD DICTIONARY ENGLISH LANGUAGE 20TH CENT SUB ED Beautiful Antique and Collectible 2 volume set of Funk & Wagnall Standard Dictionary of the English Language. Published in 1908 (117 years ago!) this is a special 20th Century Subscription Edition. It is leather bound, black, with embossed floral designs on both front and back covers. Gold toned detailing accents on front and back covers. The spines feature more beautiful gold toned design and lettering. Burgandy and cream colored end papers. Both fronts and backs have gold toned alphabetized tabbing for look-up ease. There is also alphabetized tab indexing directly notched into the book pages, which alternately state, " Improved Index", CH Denison's Pat", Pat Oct 7, 1884". Books are large and each measure approx: 12.5" high X 10" wide X 2.5" thick. Total weight of both books is approx 18.2 lbs. The two volume set features eight pages of the more than two hundred specialists and other scholars who, under the the supervision of Editor-In-Chief Isaac K. Funk, prepared this complete two-volume set which provides an informative dictionary of the English Language as it was at the turn of the century. Volume I comprised word definitons for letters A-L. Volume II comprises word definitions for letters M-Z. This complete set of two volumes is a New Edition Revised and Enlarged, and includes: Abridged Cyclopedia, Atlas Of The World with color illustrations, Universal Calendar, Appendix, Language Key, Glossary Of Foreign Words, Disputed Spellings and Pronunciations, Abbreviations And Contractions, Symbolic Signifigance of Flowers And Gems, and much more. The two volume set is beautifully illustrated throughout, with parchment overlays of color plates. This is, indeed a comprehensive and amazing reference work. There is a Numbered Book Plate which reads, "No. 151312 Property of" with lines to print name. Also included is blue colored paper insertion which details, "How to Find a Word". This 1908 two volume set is truly antique and collectible. A wonderful source of reference and a beautiful addition to any library. It would be a wonderful gift for graduates, writers, and all.
