Presenting the diary of eighteenth-century English artist Joseph Farington, covering the years 1793 to 1804. Joseph Farington was an English landscape painter who wrote profusely in his diary, beginning in 1793 and only missing a few days until his death in 1821. Uniformly rebound in half morocco with cloth covered boards. Volume I contains eighteen illustrated plates that were originally included in the work, collated and complete. Volume II contains fourteen illustrated plates that were originally included in the work, collated and complete. Both are in the first edition, Volume I was published in 1922 and Volume II was published in 1923. The personal copies of twentieth-century British journalist, William Hardcastle, with his bookplate to one of the front free-endpapers of Volume I. Containing several extra illustrations and newspaper articles associated with Farington tipped and bound in, making these very unique copies of these works. For example, Volume I contains the front wrap of the work's original dust wrapper bound in. CONDITION Uniformly rebound in half morocco with cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart, with some fading to the spine and some rubbing to spine and extremities. A small split to the front joint at the head of Volume I. Containing the bookplate of William Hardcastle to one of the front free-endpapers of Volume I. Several newspaper clippings tipped and pasted into the front free-endpapers of each volume. Extra illustrations bound into both volumes. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
