This interesting take on the life of celebrated Elizabethan statesman and explorer, Sir Walter Raleigh, is largely inspired by the diaries of Raleigh's brother-in-law, Sir Arthur Throckmorton. Written by English historian A. L. Rowse. Raleigh secretly married Elizabeth Throckmorton, Arthur's sister and a Gentlewoman to the Privy Chamber to Queen Elizabeth I, a match which was fiercely opposed by the monarch, leading to a long period of disfavour for both Raleigh and his new wife. This biographical work surrounds the Throckmorton and Raleigh families. With fourteen photographic depictions and a frontispiece, including images of Throckmorton's original diaries. With the morocco bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to the front pastedown. William Foyle founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England.
