Goold Brown (1791 - 1857) was an American grammarian born in Providence, Rhode Island, the third child of Smith Brown and Lydia Gould. His family could be traced to some of the earliest Quakers in New England. He was educated in Friends' Schools in Providence and Dutchess County, New York. He began teaching at age 19, and at 21 he opened an academy for classical and literary studies in New York City. *Although this book has no publication date at the bottom of the title page, the original owner left a handwritten in contemporary pen clue opposite the title page "December 25/45" which is taken to mean December 25 (Christmas) 1845. The only other date in the book is 1832 at the bottom of the Preface. There is other writing by the original owner in both pencil and pen on the last black endpaper. It appears that the older this work is, the more that it's worth. BOOK DESCRIPTION/CONDITION: Presumed 1845 edition as stated above. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Full leather binding with title in gilt over black on spine. Spine partially chipped 2" from bottom. Some other small areas of leather wear and chipping on cover. Hinges cracked but holding. Textblock stable. Some writing front and rear as described above.
