A Book of Quotations, Proverbs and Household Words, by W. Gurney Benham. "With Full Verbal Index." Published in 1907 by J. B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia. First edition. Hardcover in 3/4 green leather boards, measuring 6 X 9 X 3 inches, 1256 pages, with top edge gilt and marbled endpapers. Nicely gilt ornamented spine, with floral motifs. Includes French, Latin and Greek quotations. Flaws include some external rubbing of the leather, especially along the spine foot, plus smaller nicks along the edges, and a few light stains on the boards. The leather spine is slightly sunned. There's little to no shedding of the leather. Internally, there's a previous owner's bookplate plus a small bookstore sticker on the front endpaper. Small pencil marks (mostly margin brackets) were erased from the first several pages, plus a few pages in the Robert Burns section. Otherwise unmarked. Binding is very secure. A couple of pages were roughly cut open (leaving tears not affecting the text). Page 636 has a small scuff, affecting a quote by Marcus Annaeus Lucanus. There's a clean, since repaired, 4 in. tear on p. 943/944 (see pic #14). And there's a small chip in p. 945/946 in the index, affecting a few of the words in the entries for Creed and Crown, respectively (see pics #15 & 16). Some pages (many toward the back of the book) remain uncut, i.e. are still attached along their top or fore-edges. A good, not very good, copy. Free shipping in the USA. Thank you for looking! Packed securely and in a reinforced, waterproof package. Shipped out fast. Items were in excellent condition, given that they are over 100 years old (and very rare, as a result). So they are as described. Who can say what the value is? Probably only an appraiser. But this was a fairly large collection of a varied sample, of a rare item. So on a per unit basis it seems they were not overly expensive, and the seller was good to work with. I recommend this seller. THANK YOU!
