Description

Benjamin Harrison: I. Hoosier Warrior, Through the Civil War Years, 1833-1865 / II. Book One, Hoosier Statesman, From the Civil War to the White House, 1865-1888; Book Two, Hoosier President, The White House and After, 1889-1901 by Harry J. Sievers 1989 The Easton Press (Norwalk, Connecticut), two 6 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches tall gray leather bound volumes, ornate gilt decoration to covers, three raised bands and gilt lettering to spines, all page edges gilt, ribbon marker sewn in, [v.1] xxx, 386; [v.2] [19], 484, [16], 303 pp. (1,238 pages total.) Volume 1 (Hoosier Warrior) as new, still sealed in publisher's clear wrap, with slight soiling to outside of plastic wrap. Volume 2 is a near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked, with no detractions noted and collector's notes and unused bookplate laid in. First published between 1952 and 1968, this series provided the first major biographical review of Harrison and remains the most comprehensive and detailed analysis of his life ever published. In addition to being Harrison’s primary biographer, Sievers was a Jesuit priest and most recently served as Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Fordham University. He died in 1977. Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) was the 23rd president of the United States, serving from 1889 to 1893. He was a member of the Harrison family of Virginia — a grandson of the ninth president, William Henry Harrison, and a great-grandson of Benjamin Harrison V, a Founding Father. A Union Army veteran and a Republican, he defeated incumbent Grover Cleveland to win the presidency in 1888. He was defeated by Cleveland in 1892, becoming the first president to be succeeded in office by his predecessor.
