Joseph Robert Kerrey was born in 1943 and served as the 35th governor of Nebraska from 1983-1987 and as a U.S. Senator from 1989--2001. Before entering politics, he graduated with a degree in pharmacy from the University of Nebraska. Kerrey served in Vietnam as a U.S. Navy Seal officer. He was severely wounded and lost part of his leg; he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery in combat. He later faced controversy for being the commanding officer during the Thanh Phong raid, where numerous civilians were killed. Kerrey was a candidate for president of the U.S. in 1992. He retired from the Senate in 2000. In 2012 Kerrey sought election to his old Senate seat in but was defeated. Kerrey recounts the experiences that shaped his life while growing up in Lincoln, Nebraska, a safe and provincial world of Saturday afternoon cowboy serials and Sunday school bible stories, and making celebrities of Billy Graham, Bishop Sheen, and Norman Vincent Peale. Kerrey's memoir describes a classic mid-American childhood where he was one of seven children. Kerrey was small and struggled to compete in sports like his older brother---although he did make the high school football team. But Vietnam was another world. After witnessing, suffering, and participating in war, Kerrey didn't just have to learn how to walk without a leg---he had to learn to be honest about himself and his country. Candid, direct and eloquent, "When I Was Young" is the powerful tale of a man and nation coming of age. 270 pages. I offer combined shipping.
