Description

Brown, John. Estimate of the Manners and Principles of the Times. London: Printed for L. Davis, and C. Reymers, against Grays-Inn-Gate, Holborn; Printers to the Royal Society, MDCCLVII [ 1757 ] . Sixth Edition. Octavo . Text in English. Bound in full leather, this book has been sympathetically rebacked with brighter leather on the spine, new endbands, and the earlier contemporary leather boards have been retained; the boards are scuffed on the surface and worn with age, and the corners have been repaired in a dark brown leather to match the original. The edges are bumped and a little nicked. The binding is firm. The endpapers are browned and foxed. The front free endpaper is a little creased and nicked to the edges. The title page has the author's name written by someone in ink. The contents are browned and foxed throughout, in varying degrees, heavier to some sections. In reasonable and readable condition throughout - a beautiful copy. Estimate of the Manners and Principles of the Times was Brown's most successful work. A bitter satire on the "vain, luxurious and selfish effeminacy of England's higher ranks, in the wake of the loss of Minorca to the French at the opening of the Seven Years' War", this treatise "pleased a public depressed by the ill-success in the conduct of the war, and ready to welcome an attack on luxury and kindred evils.” Brown wrote about what he saw as the decline in manners and principles of British citizenry, particularly the ruling class, all of which was leading, he maintained, to the eventual self-destruction of the British Empire. Although praised by some and derided by others, Brown’s Estimate was quite popular in its time, running through six editions in its first year of publication (this copy being of the sixth). If you are someone who is interested in English history this would be an excellent addition to your collection.
