Description

Sketch of the Life and Character of Louisa Maria Dole Hutchinson Prepared by Her Husband, The Rev. Oliver W. Hutchinson, For Their Sons, Oliver Wesley Hutchinson and Eliot Dole Hutchinson by Rev. Oliver W. Hutchinson 1909 O.W. Hutchinson (Bellevue, Ohio), an exquisitely bound volume, 8 x 11 1/8 inches tall x 1 1/4 inches thick full grain embossed leather bound, five raised bands to spine, gilt lettering to front cover, all page edges gilt, inlaid two-tone leather front and rear pastedowns framed by gilt dentelles, silk moire endpapers, neat type script profusely illustrated with tipped-in period photographs, and original family documents and press clippings throughout, signed by the author in period ink on the introduction, [13], 146, [13] pp. plus additional family memorabilia tipped onto blank rear free-endpapers, and laid in at the rear of the volume. Slight to moderate staining, rubbing and edgewear to covers. Slight bumping to the upper tips. Otherwise, in very good condition - clean, bright and unmarked. A seemingly unique work, not listed in OCLC or other indexes. A remarkable, apparently unique and uncatalogued 1909 biography and tribute to Louisa Maria (Dole) Hutchinson (1869-1909) of Bellevue, a small town in Huron County in northern Ohio. Written by her grieving husband to memorialize her for his sons, it is a poignant and meticulously written work, combining biography with personal reminiscences with a paean to the woman he loved, who was taken at the age of 39 from him and their two sons. The author, a Methodist minister, Rev. Oliver Wertz Hutchinson (1856-1922), appears to have completed the work on Thursday, November 4, 1909, the day he signed the introduction, just five months after her death. Contents: Introduction Genealogy Childhood and Youth Student and Teacher: Life at the Ohio Wesleyan University Love and Marriage Life at Medford: First Year in a Parsonage Life at Watertown Life at Cambridge Life at Leominster Removal to Holyoke Translation from Her Girlhood Home to Her Heavenly Home An incredibly lucid and even vivid portrait of the life of a young wife of a Methodist minister in the Midwest at the turn of the twentieth century.
