Description

Franklin Library leather edition of Irving Stone's "Lust for Life: A Novel of Vincent Van Gogh," a limited edition, illustrated by Howard Rogers, Personally Signed by IRVING STONE, one of the SIGNED 60 series, published in 1981. Bound in deep hunter green leather, the book has moire end leaves, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, a satin book marker, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition---except for 'moderate' fading on edges of moire silk. Irving Stone, who was lived from 1903 --- 1989, was an American writer, chiefly known for his biographical novels of noted artists, politicians and intellectuals. " Lust for Life" (1934) is a biographical novel about the life of the Dutch painter VINCENT van GOGH. Van Gogh, who lived from 1853-1890, was born near Breda in the Netherlands. When he was sixteen his parents sent him to The Hague to work for his uncle who was an art dealer, but Van Gogh was unsuited for business. He applied for theology school but was rejected; therefore, he became an unordained preacher. He worked as a minister in the Borinage, a poor coal-mind district in Belgium, going without food to provide for the poor. While in Borinage, Van Gogh began to paint, first still lives and scenes of peasants at work. "The Potato Eaters" (1885) is his finest and most ambitious work of this period. In 1886, he went to PARIS to visit his brother, Theo and was attracted to the impressionist art he saw there. In 1888, he moved to ARLES where he painted sunflowers. In Arles, he suffered from occasional violent seizures, which were diagnosed after his death as epilepsy. During a seizure late in 1888, he threatened to kill the French painter Paul Gauguin, who was visiting him. Van Gogh cut off his own ears during this seizure. Stone's novel is largely based on the three volumes of letters between Vincent van Gogh and his younger brother, art dealer Theo van Gogh. This correspondence lays the foundation for most of what is known about the thoughts and beliefs of the artist. Stone conducted a large amount of "on-field" research for the novel. Stone wanted to explain Van Gogh's difficult life and how he began, flourished, and died as a painter. The book is divided into places where Van Gogh lived: LONDON, BORINAGE, ETTEN, THE HAGUE, PARIS, ARLES, ST. REMY and AUVERS. Van Gogh rarely sold a painting and when he died, his brother, Theo, took possession of the entire collection. The novel was adapted into the 1956 Academy Award winning film starring KIRK DOUGLAS. 512 pages. I offer Combined shipping.

Seller earns high marks for very safe wrapping, quick delivery and right price. Book is in excellent condition. To no fault of seller, and unusual deviation of normal high standards of the publisher, I would not recommend this book to others. It has has very disappointing photography that distracts from art of Rodin. But I highly recommend the seller.
