Description

Franklin library leather edition of Harrison Salisbury's "The Long March: The Untold Truth," Frontispiece of the Red Army by Susi Kilgore, a First edition, PERSONALLY SIGNED by HARRISON SALISBURY, one of the SIGNED FIRST EDITION SOCIETY series, published in 1985. Bound in black leather, the book has decorative paper end leaves, a satin book marker, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition. Harrison Evans Salisbury , who lived from 1908 – 1993, was an American journalist and the first regular New York Times correspondent in MOSCOW after World War II. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and graduated from University of Minnesota in 1930. He spent nearly 20 years with United Press (UP), much of it overseas, and was UP's foreign editor during the last two years of World War II. He joined the NEW YORK TIMES in 1949 and became their Moscow correspondent, traveling widely in Siberia, Central Asia and Outer Mongolia along China's borders. Salisbury and his wife, Charlotte, and several Chinese guides, spent two and a half arduous months retracing the route taken by MAO ZEDONG and his comrades. The Salisbury party traversed China's harshest terrain---snowpeaked mountain ranges and treacherous marshlands---covering 7,400 miles. Of the 86,00 Long Marchers in Mao's group, only 4,000 made it to Shaanxi in the north a year later. In 1972, Salisbury presented the proposal to ZHOU ENLAI who eventually approved the project. "The Long March" is compelling reading about the Chinese Red Army's retreat from CHIANG Kai-Shek's Nationalist forces in 1934. Only 4,000 made it to Shaanxi in the north a year later. 419 pages, including an Index. I offer Combined shipping.
