Considered a classic work, this History by William Prescott covers the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella in great detail by exploring the literature, history, geography and other aspects of life in Renaissance Spain. Some engravings by William Greatbach (Greatbatch) in Volume I as portraits of Isabella, Ferdinand and Columbus, and another of coinage in Volume II. Prescott was a great scholar of Spain and Mesoamerica. The grandson of a Revolutionary hero, Prescott studied extensively and wrote of history as a narrative arc, using archives in a careful and thorough way to develop a sequence of events. Some scuffing and discoloration on both volumes: spine starting to split on volume one at top. Gilt outline decoration on front and back. Bookplate of former owner inside front. Some water damage/discoloration primarily in Volume II on title page. Some foxing.
