Description

Extremely rare, leather bound, gilt edge, first edition (1866) In Vinculis, or, The Prisoner of War Being the Experience of a Rebel in Two Federal Pens: Interspersed with Reminiscences of the Late War, Anecdotes of Southern Generals, etc. An excellent volume for the serious collector. The only other volumes I have seen of this book were cloth bound and not nearly as fine. This is the only copy I have come across that is in the original leather with gilt edges. This is the autobiographical account of A.M. Keiley, an officer in the Army of Northern Virginia. Keiley was captured in June of 1864 when Generals Gillmore and Kautz were sent to capture Petersburg, and destroy the rail lines and bridges across the Appomatox river. He includes humorous anecdotes, campaign details, as well as his and other Southern soldiers' experiences in harsh Northern prison camps. The book is dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Petersburg campaign. Fascinating fact: the book is listed as being published on behalf of the District of Virginia -- indicating that Virginia had not yet been taken back into the Union as a state.
