This volume of two works by two stated authors is complete as published... AF DISCUSSION NOTES: A new Greek lexicon with special emphasis on dialect. Jacob Zwinger's Graecarum Dialectorum Hypotosis, appended as a book of about 180 leaves with a separate title page is a dichotomy of Greek grammar, with a detailed analysis of variations between Attica, Doric, Ionic, and Poetic ancient Greek dialects. Jacob Zwinger was a well known scholar and physician, son of Theodor Zwinger and at the time the editor of his father's Thetarum Humanae Vitae , a comprehensive humanist encyclopedia that makes frequent use of the dialectic analysis presented here. The Zwingers expounded dialectic analysis most importantly to medicine and to travel for scholars and explorers. Speculating here, but it seems as if appending the Hypotosis to Scapula's Lexicon may have been an attempt to graft his work on the large comprehensive encyclopedia...similar perhaps to the way encyclopedia companies occasionally provide a dictionary with the traditional set of A to Z volumes. The printing quality is not fabulous, with frequent substitutions of fonts and changes in running titles. Smears from vibration in the type furniture appear commonly. The missing pages are a mystery, especially since institutional copies (not examined) miss the entire section. BINDING: Full calf, as recased to style.
