Description
Lexicon Aristophanicum Also known as Lexicon Aristophanicum, græco-anglicum James Sanxsay The boards are marbled pasteboard with leather spine and corners. Very worn. The publication date is 1811. Faint pencil marks on the endpaper. Binding starting to split between endpaper and preface. Foxed Bookplate pasted inside front cover: The Cowper and Newton Museum Olney, Bucks The William Wright Library Presented by William Wright of Moseley near Birmingham. The Cowper and Newton Museum in Olney, Buckinghamshire, England, celebrates two famous local residents: William Cowper a celebrated 18th-century poet; and John Newton, a prominent slave trader who was curate in the local church. I'm not sure that Sanxay's Lexicon had anything to do with either Cowper or Newton. Thomas Jefferson apparently owned a copy of Sanxay's Lexicon --it was mentioned in correspondence with his bookseller. A book that survives more than 200 years is a rarity, an artifact from another era; like holding history in your hand. And it feels like history. Other than the bookplate, I don't know the provenance but I do know it was offered at auction at Sotheby's at one time. The book has an intrinsic value that is indelible.
