Description

Attention Collectors!!! You are bidding on a very rare antique hardcover book titled A Statistical View of the Commerce of the United States of America - its Connection with Agriculture and Manufactures - and an Account of the Public Debt, Revenues, and Expenditures of the United States, with a brief review of the trade, agriculture, and manufactures of the Colonies, previous to their Independence. Accompanied with Tables, Illustrative of the Principles and Objects of the Work. By Timothy Pitkin, a Member of the House of Representatives of the United States, from the State of Connecticut. Printed in Hartford by Charles Hosmer, 1816. This is the extremely scarce First Edition! It also has amazing provenance! An important economic survey, compiled by Federalist Congressman Timothy Pitkin from his research into the effects of Republican economic policy. Book is fully bound in leather. The spine features five raised bands. The titling is in gold lettering on a red morocco label. Covers are firmly attached with no cracking or splitting of hinges. There are 407 pages followed by an Appendix. The pages are very clean and tightly bound. The leather shows some wear but remains in very good condition. The book is in overall very good-plus condition! The book has some wonderful provenance. There is a very old previous owner bookplate on inside of front cover. The bookplate belonged to Robert Hyde Greg. Here is info about him: Robert Hyde Greg (24 September 1795 – 21 February 1875), was an English industrialist, economist and antiquary. Born in Manchester, the son of Samuel Greg, the creator of Quarry Bank Mill, he was brother to William Rathbone Greg and the junior Samuel Greg. His mother, Hannah, was a descendant of Philip Henry. He attended the University of Edinburgh and, after the obligatory Grand Tour of the antiquities of Continental Europe, joined his father's textile manufacturing enterprise. He was active in Manchester intellectual life as a member of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society and was a founder of the Mechanics' Institute. He was an active member of the Liberal Party and the Anti-Corn Law League. Though he was elected to Parliament for Manchester in 1839, it was without his consent and he resigned in the following year. He was an opponent of factory reform, trades unions and worker health and safety legislation. He died at Norcliffe Hall, Styal, Cheshire and is buried at the Dean Row Unitarian Chapel, Wilmslow. Ron’s Book Nook was a complete privilege to do business with. Item was exactly as described, was packaged with extreme care and thoroughness to maintain the integrity of the antique book, communication excellent, and item arrived only a couple of days after purchase. Very satisfied with this transaction (price was reasonable), and would definitely recommend this seller.
