Black's Law Dictionary ~ HENRY CAMPBELL BLACK ~ First Edition ~ 1st 1891 Leather Very nice condition! New leather bindings, hinges rock solid, interior good+ at a minimum. Overall condition is Very Good. Several of the pages were replaced by copying them from another 1st edition I have and matched as close in coloration as possible to the original. The 9th and 10th photos shows how close the match is. Professional rebinding done by Wert Bookbinding of Grantville, PA. Properly rounded and backed prior to being rebound in full natural leather. The original sewing was restored and strengthened. New off-white endpapers were added, front and back. Hand stamped spine label applied as was done with the original binding. Hand set type and stamping applied to both front and back covers as was done with the original. Black lettering added to stand out against the tan leather. Hand set pin striped headbands applied to the spine. New tan leather binding with two points to note - just below the spine label, on the right side is a very tiny nick to the leather. Its about the size of a pencil point and shows up as a small bright spot just below the pinstriping. On the upper right of the rear cover, the leather has a section that is darker than the rest of the leather. As with any natural leather, variations in color or darkness are common; this is not stained or water marked. On the thumb tabs, the letter D has flaked off from the tab. Before rebinding, both the top and bottom page edges were trimmed to remove any writing from the outer edges of the pages. In trimming the edges, a small section of the paper bound up and "crinkled" somewhat, as seen in the photos of the top of the book. When opened to those pages, the page is not affected, this "crinkle" only seen when viewing the book from the outside. The title page through page IX of the preface was missing when I purchased this copy, so I had those pages photo copied from another copy being rebound at the same time (see my other listing for the "Fat" copy). Page 1251, 1252 and 1253 were also copied and replaced. Page IX is included twice - one is the original page from this book and one is an extra photocopy they inserted . Very light edge chipping to the original page IX; page 3 and pages 1247 and 1249. This is on the extreme outer edge and maybe 1/32 of an inch in width. No text is affected. Various pages throughout the book show signs of light waterstaining to the bottom margin and lower right edge of the page. The majority of it ranges from clear and inconsequential in size, to slightly larger.
