Covers bumped, rubbed and edgeworn, with cracking to front hinge at top and bottom and rear hinge at bottom, with 1/2-inch leather lacking from the lower backstrip. Black ink mark to front pastedown. Irish Jesuit priest's early prior owner name in a neat hand to top of title page (Fr. Henry Hughes, Dublin). A child's handwriting practice and prior owner name to verso of title page, with some offsetting to the adjacent letter from the publisher, J.B. Besongne. Very light marginal foxing to front and rear prelims. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this scarce edition of this collection of Christian aphorisms by an anonymous abbot. OCLC (Nos. 460942384 and 406632971) locates only two copies worldwide - one at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris and one at the Bibliotheque Municipale de Lyon in Lyon, France. The French title translates as 'Christian Moral Maxims and Reflections from Scripture, the Saints, the Holy Fathers and the Best Authors, Ancient and Modern, ... By Abbot of **** , Doctor of Theology.'
