Description
Confessions of aYoung Man , by George Moore. The Modern Library, Boni & Liveright, NewYork. Undated, but the Introduction by Floyd Dell indicates this edition waspublished in 1917 (the original publication took place in 1886). This datewould appear to be confirmed by pencilled markings from the original owner,“Theresa G. Chamberlin”, who dates her signature 1921. Soft pebbled-leatherettecover with embossed “Modern Library” crest on the front; edges are slightlyworn, and the back cover has a crack but only on the inside (you can’t detectit from the outside). 227 pages. Binding is still quite good; overall conditionis fair-to-good, and very readable. These are the memoirs and very aggressiveopinions of the young George Moore (he wrote “Esther Waters”, grew up withOscar Wilde, and was considered the first great modern Irish novelist); likeRimbaud, his youthfully over-dramatic declarations and his deliberatelyperverse assessments of contemporary writers and artists are immature, frequently downright silly, wilfully anti-establishment, extremely influential, and vastly entertaining to read. Miss Chamberlin was apparently a young flapperand early feminist; her pencilled marginalia dismiss some of these opinionswith pert comments such as “What a fool!” and “What rot!” They’re asentertaining as Moore’s own writing. Much fun to be had!

Item came quickly. Very well packaged in a large, oversize box with bubble wrap and packing peanuts. Item exactly as described (like new). Not available on DVD, so this is an alternative and was at a very good price. Very much enjoyed this series when first broadcast and am very happy I have it once again. Good seller.
